The textile industry is a vast and complex world, full of processes and specific terms that can be confusing for those unfamiliar with it. One of those terms is "textile maquila," a fundamental part of the clothing production chain that raises curiosity and questions about its operation.
In this article, we're going to delve into the world of textile maquila, explaining in detail what it is, how it works, and why it may not always be the best option.

In simple terms, a textile maquila is a company or workshop dedicated to manufacturing clothing for third parties, solely responsible for the manufacturing of garments, nothing more (in most cases).
That is, other brands or designers outsource the production of their garments to these maquilas, which are responsible for turning the design into reality.
These companies are vital links in the supply chain of the fashion industry, contributing to the mass production of clothing, especially for companies engaged in full-package modalities.
Textile maquila operates as another gear in the complex machinery of the fashion industry. First, a designer or brand approaches a maquila with their design and production specifications or technical data sheets, cutting the layout or patterns, and in some cases, sewing inputs.
Then, the maquila takes care of carrying out all the necessary stages to turn that design into real garments. Depending on the maquila and the type (we'll see more later), it may include fabric selection, cutting, sewing, finishing, and in some cases, even packaging and shipping.
There are two main types of textile maquilas: home-based and industrial maquilas. The former usually consist of a small team, generally from one to five people, and can operate in a smaller space, such as a home workshop, receiving small productions with long delivery times.
On the other hand, industrial maquilas have larger facilities and employ more than twenty people on their staff, receiving mass productions with moderately short delivery times.

Textile maquilas are used to allow designers and brands to outsource the production of their garments, allowing them to focus on other areas of their business, such as design, marketing, and sales.
They also offer flexibility in production capacity and can help reduce operating costs for brands that still do not have the capacity to produce internally from scratch by creating their own workshop with their own machines.
Although textile maquilas offer certain advantages, they also have their challenges. In many cases, selecting a textile maquila can result in logistical problems, especially in terms of delivery times.
Additionally, errors in garment production can be costly and can negatively impact the brand's reputation and finances. For these reasons, some brands prefer to opt for a comprehensive production model rather than relying on a textile maquila.
There is a misconception that the best option to start a fashion brand is to start manufacturing with small maquilas, but it is a myth; there are more profitable and secure options such as private label.
